13. The Church of the Virgin Mary

At the time, it was a tiny church used as a cemetery chapel. It was destroyed during the Hussite crusades (1427 and 1431), yet the citizens reconstructed the church and added an extension in about 1452. Until the early 18th century, it served for funeral purposes. It is worth remembering that the temple served the Evangelicals from Uniegoszcz and Radostów as a refuge church from 1654 to the 40s of the 18th century. During the Bubonic Plague the church was turned into a bubonic chapel. In 1687, there was another priest appointed, called a bubonic priest. One of the biggest cemeteries in Lubań was situated in the close neighbourhood of the church. At present, it is an Evangelical temple. Over the centuries, the church went through multiple renovations and reconstructions. In 1563, the structure of the roof of the tower was rebuilt. In 1613, benches were replaced. In 1626, walls and windows were renovated. In the following years a new choir, the councillors' lodge and the pulpit were added. In 1683, during a funeral mass, a lightning bolt struck the tower of church causing substantial damage to it and killing one of the mourners inside the church. In the late 16th century, the choir was exchanged, a new baptismal bowl was purchased and pipe organs were installed. Another lightning bolt inicted massive damage to the church's structure in 1709. However, a large-scale reconstruction works took place between 1730 and 1735 (4 new windows were tted, a pipe organ choir was installed, the wooden ceiling, the choir, the pulpit, the bell were replaced, the altar and the baptismal bowl were renovated). The pipe organs were modernised in 1815. In 1840, the walls of the church were reinforced by buttresses. The last extensive renovation of the oors, by Albert Augustin's design, was performed between 1887 and 1888.
